The GOTRIS GUI project was done as a part of the Information Visualization course I attended during my first year at the Interaction Design & Technologies Master program. The project deliverables was a concept of an iPad GUI that could aid maritime pilots during their work on the Göta älv river and it was done in collaboration with Kevin Orende.
An important aspect of the project was to create an interface that could be sporadically used by the pilot and not require attention unless it was needed. The GOTRIS system is a scheduling system combining train traffic, maritime traffic and emergency traffic in order to allow for more efficient transports with reduced waiting times at the bridges along the river.
In order to understand how pilots work and what their needs were we conducted an observation study onboard a vessel with a pilot. The study was conducted on the bridge in company with the pilot and the ship's captain. Both the captain and the pilot were interviewed and observed to see what was needed by the pilot.
